FDA Warns GERD Drugs May Deplete Magnesium WASHINGTON -- Use of prescription or over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors (PPI) for a year or longer may lead to low levels of circulating magnesium, which may increase the risk of leg spasms, arrhythmias, and seizures, according to an FDA warning.

A Heartburn Cure - How To Cut Back On Stomach Acid By Gilbey Scott Being unaware of the chemistry involved in processing food can leave someone venerable to not only to heartburn but other issues like sinus problems and other conditions where concentrated acid vapors can aggravate and inflame . Heartburn is often overlooked as the causes of problems of the adjoining passageways of the head and lungs. All this happens as the result of an overly acidic environment brought on primarily by food chemistry, which can lead to problems anywhere stomach acid can reach.
Here’s where we have to talk about balance but before we do, let me remind you that manufacturers of antacid medications have no interest in curing your heartburn. Also, manufactures of food products are under no obligation to look out for your nutritional well being. So, who’s going to do it for you? If you’re reading this, you’re too old for your mom to be doing it.
A balanced meal plan should be an everyday thing. By cutting back on meat, colas, snack foods and processed foods that contain fat, sugar and acid, it is possible to come to a more alkaline base for you body chemistry. Of course you need to fill in with healthy foods so you don’t go hungry. This is done with fresh produce, which has none of these additives and processed calories. Take time to learn all the alkaline food products that can be used to balance a daily menu.
Some healthy thoughts

</ul> What Do You Wish Others Understood About GERD? <p>What type of reaction have you gotten when you told someone you have GERD or acid reflux disease? Some of you have doubtless had someone, who may suffer from heartburn once a year, try to tell you they understand what you are experiencing. Or worse still, having someone tell you it's no big deal, pop an antacid and you'll be fine.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, having a flare up with our GERD isn't just annoying. It can have a big impact on our lives. "Blakelylaw" describes it well:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><strong>"Those at a distance who are not familiar with the disease have no idea how debilitating a major attack can be and that it can take a few days for your body to recuperate afterwards & get back to normal."</strong></p>
<p>There are many aspects about living with GERD that non-sufferers don't understand. We often have to educate those around us.</p>
<p>So, <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/u/ua/gerdacidrefluxdisease/What-Do-You-Think-Family-Friends-Should-Know-About-Gerd.htm" target="_blank">what do you wish others knew about living with GERD</a>. You can either leave your thoughts by clicking on the Comments link at the end of this post, or you can <a href="http://heartburn.about.com/u/ua/gerdacidrefluxdisease/What-Do-You-Think-Family-Friends-Should-Know-About-Gerd.htm" target="_blank">submit your reply here</a>.</p> Avoid Heartburn While Traveling <p>Warm weather, the open road, and the urge to get out of town - yes, vacation season is upon us. Traveling has many joys, but it can also be tough, particularly for people with heartburn. Unusual foods, eating on the run, and the overindulgence that often goes hand in hand with being on vacation can all contribute to a flare up of acid reflux disease. Combine that with the stress of jet lag and sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings, and you've got a recipe for putting the burn back into heartburn. However, by <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://heartburn.about.com/od/dailylife/a/travel-hrtburn.htm">taking a few precautions when you travel</a>, you can have the vacation you dreamed of and leave your heartburn symptoms behind.</p> Top GERD Treatments - Fundoplication Surgery <p>Fundoplication is the standard surgical treatment for GERD. The purpose of the surgery is to reduce heartburn caused by acid reflux. For more information, check out the following resources:</p>

Cut back on acidic foods, such as meat and processed foods
As part of your heartburn cure diet be sure to include lots of fresh or frozen vegetables that are lightly cooked or steamed have all their nutrients. Even soups, cooked in their own juices are good health choices. I suggest that you try for your own fresh squeezed vegetable and fruit recipes; this is far tastier than most commercial products.
By totaling up the nutritional contents on your food packages, you can put together a balanced menu that will eliminate your heartburn. You may even lose a little weight as an added benefit but we’re discussing a heartburn cure here.
Don’t sell yourself short! You can do it and you will feel better as you progress. A diet like this will give you more energy and mental alertness. It needs to be thought of as a long-term heartburn plan that will eventually give you the calcium reserves you body needs for a heartburn cure as well as enough extra for other processes that keep the body in tune.
For that occasional heartburn episode that pops up there are remedies as simple as chewing gum to generate more saliva, or a cold glass of low fat milk. Then there is licorice, usually in pill form, regarded as a remedy for stomach pain and an effective way to protect the stomach lining.
Keep in mind that the body needs daily doses of calcium and other minerals. These are not something the body can manufacture and therefore requires your help in supplying a regular intake for many operations besides heartburn and body acidity.
